Born in Australia, Robert was principal baritone with the National Opera in Melbourne. After studying in Paris in 1955/56, he was engaged by the Royal Opera, Covent Garden for three seasons before moving to Germany in 1959.
Robert's Australian opera repertoire includes the title roles in Rigoletto, Gianni Schicchi, Macbeth, The Flying Dutchman, The Mikado and Simon Boccanegra. He also sang Trinity Moses in Mahagonny, Don Fernando and Pizarro in Fidelio, Rangoni in Boris Godunov, Valentine in Faust, Wolfram in Tannhauser, Donner in Das Rhiengold, Telramund in Lohengrin, Fitz Kothner in Die Miestersinger von Nurnberg, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Alfonso D'Éste in Lucrezia Borgia, the four villain roles in Les Contes D'Hoffmann, Anckarstroem in Un Ballo in Maschera, Ford in Falstaff, Amonasro in Aida, Francesco in I Masnadieri, Iago in Otello, Germont in La Traviata, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Tonio in Pagliacci, Michele in Il Tabarro, Marcello in La Boheme, Scarpia in Tosca, Capulet in Romeo et Juliette, Peter in Hansel and Gretel.
Travelling the world throughout his career, Robert has also performed in opera houses in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Cologne, Hanover, Mannheim, Dusseldorf, Kassell, Essen, Wiesbaden, Strasbourg, Zurich, New Orleans, Houston, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Singapore and Vienna.
Robert was awarded the OBE in 1980 and the AM in the 1992 Queen's Birthday Honours. |
