The Joan Sutherland Society of Sydney was formed in 1978 to provide financial assistance and encouragement to aspiring young singers by funding The Joan Sutherland Society of Sydney Scholarship and The Encouragement Award as part of The McDonald’s Performing Arts Challenge.
The first Scholarships of $200 each were awarded the following year in the City of Sydney Eisteddfod for a male and female singer between 17 and 20 years. The Eisteddfod was renamed the Performing Arts Challenge in 1993.
In 2007, THE JOAN SUTHERLAND SOCIETY OF SYDNEY VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP became THE JOAN SUTHERLAND & RICHARD BONYNGE VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP including singers up to 25 years and the value doubled to $5,000. The Marja Baudish Encouragement Award was increased to $1,500.
To honour our late patron, The Rosina Raisbeck Encouragement Award will be presented for the first time in 2008. This inaugural award, valued at $2,500, has been sponsored by Mr Alan Jones AO.
